Making Costume For Halloween

To find adult Halloween costumes that are of the caliber to win a costume party, consider a sexy sailor fancy dress costume. Whether you want something scary, sexy, funny or just plain original, there are many ways to stand out next October 31st. If you're languishing over the fact that you only have a couple of weeks left and you still have no idea what you're going to wear, then check out www.frightcatalog.com, www.hottopic.com and www.buycostumes.com for super time-sensitive, last-minute express shipping.

While the grown up girls will prefer to buy a sexy sailor fancy dress costume, some of the cleverest childrens costumes are the ones parents devise and make themselves. For instance, some kids paint themselves all black and dress in black (with red or blue colored sleeves and iPod accessories), while carrying matching backdrops, to go as the classic iPod ad! Other kids dress up as the "Koolaid" man and have two friends dress as pieces of the wall he was busting through. You can dress as a "Holy Cow," as the late gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson or as one of the "Royal Tenenbaums" in a red cord track jacket, sweatband, faux fur and eyeliner. You can go as "Nick Nolte's Mug Shot" by wearing a Hawaiian shirt and messing up your hair, or you may want to use that Hawaiian garb to go with your moustache and sunglasses, as in "Weekend at Bernies." Imagine the laughter at the costume party when you arrive as a lawn gnome, pine tree air freshener or paper doll!

However, if you're looking for this year's trendiest Halloween costumes, then look no further than the blockbuster Hollywood hits. For instance, the latest Batman movie is bound to bring a host of Jokers, Batmans and Two-faces. You can find some great adult costumes at www.halloweenadventure.com and www.costumzee.com, or you can make your own. Adults may also look to films like "Grease," "Titanic," "Chicago," "A Clockwork Orange," "Moulin Rouge," "Cabaret," "The Seven Year Itch" (Marilyn Monroe), "Breakfast at Tiffanys" (Audrey Hepburn), "Elizabeth-The Golden Age" or "Gone With the Wind" for inspiration. For kids costumes, Harry Potter will continue to be popular throughout 2009, so check www.whimsicalley.com, www.onlinecostumestore.com or www.hollywoodcostumes.com! There are a number of adorable kids costume ideas at www.buycostumes.com that are new for 2008, like Indiana Jones, Transformers, Iron Man, Pokemon, Speedracer, Batman and Cookie Monster. Girls may want to dress as Hannah Montana, or as a character from High School Musical or the Chronicles of Narnia. If money is no object to you and you want to stop the show with a movie-quality $500 Bigfoot, $300 Evil Inbred or $2,000 Wraith costume, then be sure to check www.thehorrordome.com!

Remember that execution is critical when it comes to assembling your own original Halloween costumes. Remember that you'll want people to know who you are immediately so try to make it clear. Don't forget the essential items, like the cigarette holder for a Hunter S. Thompson costume or the white fishing hat for Gilligan. Thirdly, don't overlook the costume design details, such as hair, make-up and accessories. If you're going as a character from the "Rocky Horror Picture Show" and you don't have eyeliner on, then what are you doing? Practicality is usually last on the list of considerations, but if you're able to use the bathroom comfortably and can walk and talk okay, then chances are you'll have a better time.

The Quick Costume Idea

If you’re about to attend a Halloween party or a costume party but don’t have anything to wear and don’t have time for an elaborate costume you can often get away with very simple ideas. Some quirky costume ideas can be very easy to pull off and what’s even better is that a last minute costume idea relies on things you already have. While it might be easy to just buy a readymade costume for your party some of the best costume ideas are homemade affairs that require no sewing. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Monday  Costume Idea Blues

You know that feeling of waking up on a Monday morning and wishing all you could do is roll right back into bed and not come out? Well this costume idea takes that feeling and makes it into a fun costume that everyone is sure to understand.

Put on a bathrobe over your cutest pajamas and mess up your hair with some hair gel. Then roll up a newspaper and put it in your bathrobe pocket, instant Monday blues. If you’d like you can even carry a pillow around with you, or add some realism by putting some dark eye shadow under your eyes to create eye bags.

Abstract Art  Costume Idea

Ever wished you could look like a work of art? Now’s your chance. This costume idea is fairly simple to put together and requires minimum effort as well. For this costume idea you will need some old clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Splatter paint all over the clothes in patterns. When you’re about to go to the party hang a picture frame around your neck or hold it up against you, you are now a piece of art!

James Bond 007 Costume Idea

One costume idea that is also fairly easy to put together is the James Bond costume idea. This works great for couples. You will be the hit of the party as Bond and sexy Bond girl with costume jewelry. Many of us have a suit and nice cocktail dress lying around.

This is an easy look to get into after work. All you need to add to the effect is a martini glass or a toy gun. Have your Bond girl carry the vodka martini glass while you hold onto the toy gun. Whip out a sexy pose when anyone asks what you’re supposed to be. Another variation on this costume idea is to play the boss and the secretary. Instead of a cocktail dress your partner can come dressed in sexy office clothes.

Second Birthday Party Ideas

Your child learned a lot and grew by leaps and bounds between one and two years of age, so the second birthday party is going to be a little different from the first. But throwing the perfect second birthday party will be easy when you follow these tips:

1. Keep in mind that the point of a birthday party is to get family and friends together to be with your child. It is not a competition with other moms and it is not a race to see who can have the most professional looking party. Keep your sanity and your enjoyment level in mind when you start planning.

2. As you're planning your child's second birthday party you'll want to keep his or her abilities and limitations in mind. Two years old is still too early to have a full blown birthday party with lots of friends. Your child is learning to play with others but he or she is still too young to truly enjoy the company of peers. It's wise to keep your guest list small. Invite close family and friends and no more than two other children your child's age. This way you won't have too much chaos at your party location.

3. Having your party at home is the easiest way to keep things under control. However, if you feel like your house isn't big enough for a party, you can use the local park or a recreation center. Parties at corporate child-themed play centers can get expensive and you won't be able to enjoy any time with your child. Often the activities are geared for kids who are much older than your child.

4. Some people choose a theme by selecting their child's favorite television character. It's easy to go this route, but if you want to be a little bit more creative, you can come up with your own homemade theme. Two-year-olds generally aren't old enough to insist on a character party, so you can easily plan something around their favorite activities or interests. Pick something that your child loves, like music, colors or dinosaurs, and then run with that theme.

Some other two year old party themes are:
* Barn/farm animals
* Cats and dogs
* Jungle animals
* Pirates
* Garden (with butterflies and flowers)
* Gnomes and Fairies

5. Once you've got your theme, you can start to plan activities. Toddlers enjoy activity stations that can let them wander from place to place. These are easy to set up and really suit this age group because they don't have to follow instructions. Arrange two to three different stations that parents can help out with. Consider a station with toys, a game station and a coloring station. This way the kids will be entertained and the parents can get involved too. Find coupons for discount craft supplies here and discount art supplies here. And check here for coupons on award winning educational programs and activities.

6. Your party shouldn't last more than two to three hours. If your child takes regular naps, you can schedule the party for in between the first and second nap. If they vary from day to day, a party in the late afternoon will work best. No matter what type of party you plan, it will be a special event!

A Formula for a Fantastic 1st Birthday Party

Before you know it, your little baby will be turning one and well on his or her way to toddlerhood. Many moms (and dads alike) stress out over throwing a first birthday party. Since it's such a momentous occasion, there's a lot of pressure to make everything perfect. But sometimes it's best to keep it simple.

For a first birthday, simple is the name of game. Leave the 30-person parties at Chuck-E-Cheese for future birthdays. A few close friends and family members and a party at home are all a one-year old needs to enjoy his or her special day.

Start your planning by making the guest list. Besides you and your spouse, you should include any other people that are particularly important in your child's life. Grandparents and other caregivers should be invited, of course. Beyond that, it's up to you how many people you want to include.

You may decide to limit it to just a handful of people, or include a few special friends. Because everyone will want to hold and see the child during the birthday party, keeping things small will allow your child to see everyone without getting too overwhelmed. Another added benefit of keeping it small is that there is less food to prepare and fewer people to entertain.

The next thing to decide on is your theme. For a first birthday party, most people like to keep things simple. You can stick to a blue if your child is a boy and pink if your child is a girl, and easily get your party supplies for cheap. There's no need to make your child's birthday an advertisement for a character that they will barely recognized. Colored paper plates, napkins and cups are a lot cheaper than the commercial variety, too! These can be easily found online or at your local discount stores.

The time that you hold your child's first birthday party is very important. Most one year olds take naps twice a day. Plan your party for in between these two times. Unless your child has unusual schedule, sometime around lunch should work just fine.

Serve food that your one-year-old will enjoy, and then serve grown up versions for everyone else. For example, make fruit kabobs for the party guests, and then serve your child cut up fruit pieces. You can serve a sandwich platter with rolls for the guests, and give your child bits of the different types of food.

Finally, your child's first birthday wouldn't be complete without the birthday cake. If you want to get some great shots of your child digging into the cake, consider baking a smaller, low-sugar cake for them and then having a sheet cake for the guests. This way your child can have a relatively healthy treat, without putting fingerprints in everyone else's dessert. You can buy a sheet cake from your local bakery or make one yourself the day before the party.

By keeping things simple, you'll be able to give your child a first birthday party that is enjoyable for you and everyone involved.

Tips When Seeking Halloween Party Games

Halloween fun

For a novice event planner, nothing is more daunting than the question, "Mom, can I have a Halloween party?" There are Halloween decorations, costumes, recipes and activities to plan, which can be a big task. To throw the best party, try to keep the group small (10 is ideal) and organize Halloween fun games. Whether you're planning for a teenager, a pre-teen or a young child, there are a number of fun and affordable games to keep the entertainment rolling!

Halloween party games for younger kids can range from silly Halloween fun and getting-to-know-you games, to spooky ghost story telling and puzzle solving. An easy first game is "The Name Game," where index cards with monster or Halloween character names written on them are affixed to the back of each guest. Then the person asks another guest "yes or no" questions until the right answer is guessed. Some kids love "pumpkin golf," which is a homemade golf game made out of a cardboard ramp, a carved pumpkin with an extremely large smile and a mini-golf set.

"Ghost hunter" scavenger hunts always go over well for grade school children. First wrap lollipops up like ghosts using white tissue paper and a black magic marker. Then hide them around the house and write clues about where they could be. To make it more competitive, create teams, such as "the witches," "the goblins" or "the werewolves," and have each team race back to place their lollipops into a bin as they find them, awarding a special prize to the winning team.

Or you may want to put a letter on each ghost that will form ten different Halloween words and award prizes as the kids guess them. You can also turn on "The Monster Mash" and have kids dance like monsters, freezing when the music is stopped. This will definitely have them cackling at the Halloween fun! Check out www.partygamecentral.com for more do-it-yourself ideas.

Or perhaps you're looking for fun Halloween party games for teens. Don't feel daunted in your quest for "the cool factor" with this age group, as they're a lot easier to impress than you may think! One mother said she sent out a story starter with the party invitations and asked the kids to write a creepy ending to be judged at the event. She said the stories were so funny, gross and fascinating that they reread them each year! Given the popularity of YouTube and viral videos, and how tech savvy kids are these days, you may also want to have a "Blair Witch Project Style Film Festival," asking each kid to write and film a five-minute horror movie to be screened at the party. Or if you'd like, you can make this a party activity by assembling old costume accessories and writing down movie ideas, letting kids pick out of a hat. Give each team 20 minutes to film their own movie as the other kids do another activity, waiting for their turn. Halloween hide-h-go-seek can be terrifying when the seeker is dressed up like a horrifying monster, creepy music is playing in the background and those caught have to lay on the floor like vampires in their coffins. Board games are always a howling good time for teenagers as well.

If you're planning an adult Halloween party as an excuse to get together and drink, then fear not. There are plenty of wild Halloween fun drinking games to keep your party entertaining. "Trick or treat" is a classic: The player picks a slip of paper out of a pumpkin with an embarrassing action or question and reads it aloud. They can then choose to do the action or answer the question, or take a shot. The catch is that some of the shots are "tricks" made of disgusting things and some of the shots are identical looking (but delicious) "treats!" You can also try a bobbing for apples (with numbers carved into them to indicate how many shots should be taken) and use Jell-O shots for these games. (But be careful -- they'll sneak up on ya!) Movie games are always popular as well. There's one with the movie "Halloween," where 1 drink is taken whenever Michael kills someone with a butcher knife, a female exposes her breasts, when the Halloween theme song plays, when Halloween masks appear on screen, when Loomis says "evil," when the history of Halloween is discussed and when someone drinks or does drugs. Visit www.geocities.com/madnessmike/halloweendrinking_game.htm for the rest of the rules.
